When is the New Zealand citizenship test starting?

The New Zealand Government has announced that a new citizenship test will be introduced as part of the path to citizenship, expected in late 2027. As of now, the test itself has not been released, and the government has not published exact questions or a final format.

What has been confirmed is the general shape of the test: it will cover six topic areas — the Bill of Rights Act, human rights, voting rights and democratic principles, New Zealand's system of government, criminal offences, and travelling on a New Zealand passport. These are the same six topics KiwiTest's study guide and mock tests are built around.

Because the official test isn't public yet, treat any practice material — including ours — as preparation based on the announced scope, not a preview of the real thing. For the most current, official information, always check the government's own page at govt.nz.

Our suggestion: use the time before the test launches to build a solid understanding of the six topics rather than trying to memorise a fixed question bank. Whatever the final test looks like, understanding how New Zealand's government, laws, and rights actually work will carry over.
